Participant statistics

The collection of data by atlassers is the keystone to the success of this project. To give credit where credit is due, and perhaps to encourage a little friendly competition, this page will allow you to investigate a few of the statistics concerning your activity, and to see how they fit in with those of other atlassers. The following table shows the number of observations submitted, the number of hours devoted to collecting data, the number of species found, the number of survey squares covered, and the number of point counts completed. You can change the display order by clicking on the column title. Please note that some of the atlassers in the table collected data as part of their paid job. This table is updated once a day.

It is important to underline that in certain cases there may be slight inaccuracies in the statistics listed below. This is because the atlas data is entered into the database in such a way as to provide precise details about the atlassing effort and species found for each survey squares, rather than the effort of each atlasser (at the beginning of the project, we had not envisaged showing participant statistics). Therefore, the team time recorded on the Breeding Evidence Form is always attributed to the principal atlasser identified on the form, and only to that person. This is so as not to artificially boost the statistics concerning the atlassing effort.

As it is not possible at this stage of the project to modify the way in which the data are compiled, in future, all atlassers who wish to be attributed the exact number of hours that they devoted to collecting atlas data (and the exact number of species that they recorded), should fill out their own Breeding Evidence Form. For the same reason, if two people decide to cover a given survey square, and they collect data together on some visits and separately on others, if they want to be attributed their respective hours and species, they should each fill out a Breeding Evidence Form and divide between them the hours that they spent collecting data together. Please note that all atlassers who conduct point counts should take the time to fill out both a Point Count Form and a Breeding Evidence Form.

The Atlas Team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone whose name appears in the table, irrespective of the amount of data collected. If you would rather that your name didn’t appear, please make sure that you reply “No” to the question “Should your name appear on the data summary page when your records are displayed?” This question is on your personal profile, and can be changed by selecting the Enter data page, then Review your profile and Modify your profile. If you have any problems, please contact the Atlas Office.
